Van Gogh was born in the south of the Netherlands in 1853. He was the son of a Protestant pastor and grew up in a religious family. Van Gogh was a quiet and introverted boy. He loved nature and spent a great deal of time outdoors. As a young man, Van Gogh worked for a art dealership. He taught himself to paint and soon became known for his landscapes and portraits. In 1886, Van Gogh moved to Paris, where he met and befriended many artists, including Paul Gauguin. In 1888, Van Gogh moved to Arles, in southern France, in an effort to improve his mental health. There, he painted some of his most famous works, including Sunflowers and The Starry Night. However, Van Gogh’s mental health continued to deteriorate and he eventually suffered a breakdown.
